On 25 May, the world celebrates Africa Day – a symbolic date that marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, the forerunner of today’s African Union (AU). It is an opportunity to reflect on the continent’s achievements, reaffirm the bonds of solidarity among African peoples, and highlight the challenges and opportunities Africa faces in the 21st century.
In 2025, Africa Day is celebrated under the African Union’s theme: “Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations”. This theme reflects the commitment of African countries to supporting youth and gender equality, investing in quality education, and strategically using digital technologies to drive the continent’s transformation. Tech hubs for young people and women are emerging in Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe and Cameroon. Young people are founding start-ups in digital health, smart agriculture, fintech and clean energy. Inclusive and gender-sensitive universities, along with innovation hubs in collaboration with businesses and public institutions, are redefining new ways of managing agricultural and forest spaces, as well as water use, across the continent.
In this sense, Incatema has been contributing to sustainable development in Africa for more than 25 years in relevant sectors, such as agriculture, fishing or water infrastructures. Through public-private collaboration projects, Incatema contributes to the progress and improvement of the quality of life and living conditions in the different countries in which the company operates, such as Angola, Senegal, Sao Tome and Principe and Cameroon, among others.
It is an invitation to view the continent with a new perspective: greater and more effective justice, new strategic partnerships, and increased responsible long-term investment, highlighting the remarkable leadership and resilience of its women and youth.
The implications for the private sector and international cooperation are significant, and supporting these countries in the energy transition and the move towards technology increasingly based on AI presents a major challenge for businesses.
Africa is a key player on the global stage, with a vast youth population, significant creativity, and tremendous economic and social potential.
The African diaspora plays an essential role as a cultural and economic bridge; a strategic source of knowledge, global networks, and financing. Furthermore, Africa Day is also celebrated outside the continent—in countries such as Brazil, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom—honouring Africa’s contributions to the world and promoting Pan-Africanism.
With the transformation of the OAU into the African Union in 2002, the spirit of 25 May has evolved to embrace contemporary challenges as well: economic integration, peace, security, human rights, governance, gender, climate change and sustainable development.
Africa Day is not just a historical commemoration but a day to look forward to the future. In 2025, more than ever, Africa stands as a continent of unlimited potential, whose youth, diversity, and resilience are its greatest assets. And Incatema, once again this year, reaffirms its commitment to this continent to continue contributing to its development.
