Energy efficiency and the Cambérène Waste Water Treatment Plant (EDAR)

5 March, 2019

March 5th is energy efficiency day, a priority for Incatema Consulting & Engineering in all of their projects, like the Cambérène Waste Water Treatment Plant, in Senegal. The aim of this project is to reduce contamination in the north of the city of Dakar, through the installation of cogeneration units.

The cogeneration process of the Cambérène Waste Water Treatment Plant makes use of the biogas that the plant produces. The procedure allows useful heat and electricity to be obtained simultaneously from a determined fuel, which in this case is biogas. This source of energy is the byproduct of the main process, namely digestion of the Waste Water Treatment Plant’s sludge.

Cogeneration uses both heat and mechanical and electrical energy from a single process instead of using a conventional boiler or plant.  This way electricity is produced close to the point of consumption, which provides major energy savings by avoiding changes in voltage and long-distance transportation of this energy.

Incatema promotes different types of cogeneration systems, and in the case of the Cambérène Waste Water Treatment Plant an alternating engine is used to help generate the electricity needed for this type of activity.

In addition to energy savings, cogeneration also allows helps to lower the heat and electricity bill without altering the plant’s production process.  This process provides an almost uninterrupted power supply, granting the Cambérène Waste Water Treatment Plant almost complete autonomy of operation.

Incatema continues with their commitment to offer environmental benefits in all of their projects, using renewable energy sources, as in the case of the Cambérène Waste Water Treatment Plant.
