Incatema is launching a new technical assistance project in Angola aimed at improving the livelihoods and resilience of coffee farmers by enhancing production practices while respecting sustainable agroforestry systems. The project aims to foster processing and marketing practices that highlight the distinctive character and high quality of Angolan coffee, enhancing its competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
The Mukafe project is funded by the European Union through the French Development Agency (AFD) and will run for three years.
The objective of this technical assistance is to strengthen the technical capacities of key actors along the coffee value chain. It involves training producers at the household, business, and producer organisation levels, as well as promoting entrepreneurship related to value chain services in the province of Kwanza Norte. The technical assistance will also support and facilitate actions to encourage the development of beneficial and productive interactions among the main stakeholders in the coffee value chain.
This technical assistance involves a comprehensive coffee production strategy that includes technical support, training, and infrastructure development. Specific areas of intervention include strengthening farmer cooperatives and producer groups, improving agricultural practices through training and the promotion of sustainable methods, optimising post-harvest processing, adding value in the industrial processing stage, and supporting coffee marketing by encouraging the development of a structured and competitive coffee market.
Promotion of deforestation-free agroforestry production in line with the new European Union regulations
Regarding coffee production, the technical assistance will support productive agroforestry systems and their sustainable use, in line with the new European Union regulation on deforestation-free agroforestry production.
A key component of the project is the establishment and strengthening of Farmer Field Schools for Coffee Growers, designed to transfer knowledge and best practices in the management of agroforestry systems to local coffee producers. The project also has a strong focus on supporting women and young people, who represent 20% of the project’s direct beneficiaries.
The project will have a significant impact on improving the livelihoods and resilience of coffee growers by promoting productive and sustainable agroforestry systems. It will also support business activities related to value chain services, including the provision of inputs, water access technologies, integrated fertility management, pest control, quality control, and other related services.
