Incatema carries out water tests in our drinking water network extension projects in Haiti

11 April, 2022

Incatema Consulting & Engineering is currently testing drinking water transmission capacity in various ongoing projects in Haiti aiming at rehabilitating and enlarging drinking water networks. Three of these are being implemented at present in the towns of Hinche, l’Azile and Jeremie.

Water pressure tests are carried out as pipes and connections are laid out for the concerned adduction networks.

Drinking water networks rehabilitation and extension projects currently ongoing in Hinche and Jeremie are part of the largest bilateral cooperation programme funded by the Spanish cooperation in this country. They have a total budget of 5.9 million euros funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) benefiting the Haitian National Directorate for Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA). On the other hand, l’Azile project has a budget of 1.5 million euro funded by the World Bank, equally benefiting DINEPA.

Nearly 200,000 Haitians will be benefited by these three projects in a country where, according to AECID, only one in three urban homes, 34%, is linked to a sanitation network, and this proportion is even lower in rural areas, with 17% of homes linked to sanitation network.

According to Fernando Díaz, Head of Infrastructures Department at Incatema Consulting & Engineering, ‘we face a dual challenge by bringing drinking water to one of the poorest countries, where it is most difficult to get, and do so sustainably, where the facilities are efficient with locally available means. In these cases, solar energy is the easiest and cheapest source, available in an area otherwise wrecked by 2010 earthquake with scarce infrastructure, as well as installing corresponding mechanical equipment that is energy efficient being the most advanced models the market offers'.

These projects are aimed at UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 6, universal and equal access to drinking water at a reasonable price for everyone.
