Incatema has been awarded of the contract for the expansion of the San José de Las Matas water supply system (Dominican Republic)

Incatema has been awarded the contract for the expansion of the water supply system in the municipality of San José de Las Matas (SAJOMA), Part A, located in the province of Santiago, Dominican Republic. The contract, awarded by the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage (INAPA), has a budget of €7.2 million and an estimated completion period of 24 months. The project involves the construction of a new Drinking Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) that will triple the current capacity, ensuring the supply to this municipality in the province of Santiago.

This new contract consolidates Incatema’s position in the Caribbean country and reaffirms INAPA’s confidence in the company, building on other major water projects recently carried out for the same institution, such as the construction of the DWTP in the municipality of Navarrete.

A qualitative leap in SAJOMA’s water infrastructure

The scope of the works is designed to comprehensively address the region’s drinking water supply needs, optimising both abstraction and treatment and storage.

At a technical level, the project comprises the following main actions:

• Construction of a new intake facility via direct abstraction from the Amina’s riverbed, designed to withstand seasonal flow variations and ensure a constant flow.
• Construction of an energy-efficient pumping station, equipped with state-of-the-art motor-pump units to overcome the topographical gradient.
• Installation of a new pressure pipeline connecting the pumping station to the water treatment plant, using materials with high resistance to hydraulic pressure and ensuring minimal head loss.
• Comprehensive refurbishment of the water treatment system: the existing water treatment plant, whose operational capacity was limited to 50 litres per second (l/s), will be dismantled and replaced by a newly constructed plant with a capacity to process 150 l/s.
• Construction of new drinking water storage tanks, made of reinforced concrete, which will significantly increase the system’s regulation and reserve capacity to cope with peaks in demand.
• This modern plant will include optimised processes for coagulation, flocculation, decantation, filtration and disinfection, tripling the treated flow rate and ensuring compliance with the strictest water quality standards.

An engineering challenge: tripling capacity whilst minimising the impact on the service

For Incatema’s Director of Infrastructure, Mr Fernando Díaz, this project represents a technical challenge and a first-rate social commitment.

“The expansion of the SAJOMA water supply system is a vital project for the development of the province of Santiago. From an engineering perspective, the greatest technical challenge lies in managing the transition between the decommissioning of the old 50 l/s plant and the commissioning of the new 150 l/s drinking water treatment plant whilst minimising disruption to the current service. Furthermore, the water intake works on the Amina’s River and the new pressure system have been designed with climate resilience and electromechanical efficiency in mind. We are very proud that INAPA has once again placed its trust in us, just as it did in Navarrete, to deliver high-quality drinking water in sufficient quantities to thousands of Dominican citizens.”
