In the framework of the international commemoration of the World Day of the Fisherman, which is celebrated on 26 January, Incatema announces the successful completion of the consultancy for the creation of a system of certification of origin and sustainability of fishery and aquaculture products in Cape Verde, framed within the project to strengthen the blue economy in that country, a strategic initiative driven to promote sustainability, traceability and competitiveness of fishery and aquaculture products of the archipelago.
The consultancy, awarded by the Major Projects Management Unit of the Ministry of Finance of Cape Verde and financed by the World Bank, was developed within the framework of the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project (RTBED), with the objective of supporting one of the most relevant economic pillars of the country: artisanal fishing and sustainable aquaculture.
A transformative project for the maritime sector
For more than a year, the Incatema team has carried out an exhaustive analysis of the country’s main fisheries and aquaculture productions, evaluating their potential for the certification of origin and sustainability of their products. “This work has culminated in the definition of a certification system adapted to the national context, accompanied by a detailed action plan for its practical implementation in the coming years,” says Mr Alejandro Tiana, head of this consultancy at Incatema.
The project has not only identified the fisheries and products with the greatest competitive potential, but has also involved the participation of traditional fishermen, public managers, scientists and academic representatives from Cape Verde, who contributed their expertise and insights to ensure the viability, relevance and sustainability of the proposed system.”

This effort has been a significant step towards consolidating the Cape Verdean blue economy as an engine for sustainable development. The new certification and labelling system will allow to:
– improve the traceability of fishery and aquaculture products, facilitating their recognition in international markets.
– increase the commercial value of marine resources, directly benefiting local fishing communities.
– promote responsible fishing practices and environmental sustainability, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
