Incatema boosts irrigation in Angola with the delivery of 40 technical designs for small farmers

Incatema has completed the delivery of 40 technical designs of irrigation systems, together with their corresponding 40 Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), within the project Studies of small-scale irrigation systems of up to 5 ha in the provinces of Cuanza Norte and Huíla, Angola.

This is an initiative that Incatema has been developing since last year for the Angolan Ministry of Agriculture, under the framework of the Commercial Agriculture Development Project (PDAC). These milestones represent a key step towards the implementation of irrigation solutions adapted to the needs of agricultural producers in these provinces.

“The delivery of these studies is a turning point for local agriculture in that we are providing small producers with the tools they need to professionalise their farms and ensure their food security,” says Mrs Adelaida Pérez Milán, consultancy director at Incatema.

Customised technical solutions

The studies carried out have made it possible to analyse the availability of water, the orography of the terrain and the soil and the climate characteristics of the farms. In addition, technically feasible and irrigation solutions adapted to the local conditions of each producer have been defined together with the beneficiaries. Each of the designs proposes efficient infrastructures suitable for areas of up to 5 hectares, with the objective of improving agricultural productivity and strengthening the resilience of producers to periods of drought.

Sustainability and social commitment

Together with the technical designs, the corresponding Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) have been prepared, which establish the measures necessary to prevent and mitigate possible environmental and social impacts associated with future interventions. These plans, aligned with the World Bank guidelines and the PDAC objectives, will help ensure that the development of these irrigation infrastructures is carried out in a responsible and sustainable manner, also incorporating the participation of local communities.

“Sustainability is at the core of our intervention. By aligning designs with the World Bank guidelines, we ensure that the economic growth of these communities is environmentally friendly and sustainable over time,” adds Mrs Milán.

Towards resilient agriculture

With the delivery of these technical documents, the project is moving steadily towards its ultimate goal: to facilitate access to irrigation for small producers, promoting a more productive, resilient and sustainable agriculture at the national level.
