Incatema held the first of the two workshops foreseen in a World Bank-funded consultancy to develop a sustainability and origin certification and labelling system for fisheries and aquaculture products in Cabo Verde, the past 9th July.
This consultancy, part of the Resilient Tourism and Blue Economy Development Project (RTBED), seeks studying the potentiality to create a certification and labelling scheme for sustainability and origin of fisheries and aquaculture projects. The first months were dedicated to studying the main fisheries and aquaculture products that are active in Cabo Verde and assess their potential to be certified for sustainable practice and being traceable as national origin.
This way, the tasks carried out have helped us identify seafood products featuring the strongest potential to be certified and duly labelled tracing their origin (Denomination of Origin) and sustainability (ecolabelling). The system proposed has been presented during the seminar to the main interested stakeholders to collect their feedback and produce a final system architecture under a participatory approach.
In the coming weeks, and with the feedback from interested parties, our team will assess the feasibility of the proposed origin and sustainability certification scheme for fisheries and aquaculture products and later produce a masterplan for its implementation when the consultancy is completed, to be validated in a future participatory workshop.
